Green-eyed Monster

“Jealousy makes you nasty”

A common phrase I used when I was younger to someone who showed any signs of jealousy towards another person.

Another term for it was: Green Eyed Monster…. Unfortunately I had become the Green eyed Monster…

Here’s why:

My dad recently bought my little sister a new phone and it was bigger, better and more expensive than the one I have and that tore me apart. In fact I had become jealous, I just did not openly show it but indirectly showed it with the way I spoke about it to her. I, then, realised that I had this feeling for so many things I had longed for that others had and I didn’t. I knew I didn’t not like this piercing feeling of envy but I was not taking any steps to overcome it and I decided that it was about time that I destroyed the green eyed monster that resided in me.

Here are 3 steps to do that:

1. Self control:

First of its a fruit of the spirit and obviously if we lack it, we are fruit-less and that, my friends, is similar to being unfruitful and that is not what I want because I am unable then to be a purposeful being in the Kingdom of Heaven. If we want to get rid of the green eyed monster in us, we need to learn to be self-controlled. We need to pray that God trains our eyes to see like Him inorder for our hearts to be transformed from a heart of jealousy. After all, the eye is the window for the heart. Think about it.

2. Gratitude:

In order to not be envious of worldly belongings, we need to exercise gratitude. We need to be able to thank God for all that we already have because of we’re envious, we’re ungrateful. We need to show acceptance and appreciationfor all that God has given us because He could have decided not to allow is to have all that we see and have. We need to be able to train our hearts and minds to show gratitude for what we have and not envy for what we don’t.

3. Seek God.

This is a big one because the more we seek God, the more our hearts change. If we spend time with God learning His ways, it will be harder to do what He does not approve of. After all, we want to please Him. We need to learn to ask Him to create in us clean hearts because if our hearts are clean of envy then our minds are clean from thoughts of envy. Remember where are treasures are, there our hearts are. Are our treasures on the things we long and envy for or in He who provides accordingly.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21 NIV

So this is a challenge for the both of us from now on, when we are tempted to be green-eyed monsters, remember:

1. Self-Control

2. Gratitude

3. Seek God.
